How our Van Insurance works

Third party only

This is the minimum level of van insurance available, and covers compensation costs and legal fees should you injure somebody or damage their vehicle.

Third party, fire and theft

This van insurance covers the cost of fixing or replacing your vehicle if it’s stolen or damaged by fire. This cover also offers third party liability protection.

Comprehensive van insurance

Includes everything mentioned above, and includes cover for van repairs, vehicle damage, and accidents caused by you.

It’s often believed that comprehensive van insurance is the most expensive because of how much protection it offers. However, this isn’t always the case. Price, and the level of cover available, also depends on the provider you choose. Using a van insurance comparison tool offers you the best cover and value for money.

There are four main types of van insurance:

Commercial van insurance

Also know as business van insurance, you need this cover if you drive your van for work purposes. Commercial van insurance is also divided into carriage of own goods cover (for tools of the trade) and haulage cover (for items you’re delivering).

Private van insurance

Also known as personal van insurance, this policy is for those who drive vans for social and domestic reasons.

Courier van insurance

This cover is for drivers who make regular deliveries using their van. Couriers often transport valuable goods, which means they often need a higher level of cover.

Pickup van insurance

This covers you for both commercial and non-commercial use.

To set-up your van insurance you will need to provide the following information:

Your personal details

You’ll need to tell us the kind of driving license you have, your occupation and driving history, including any offences or claims. If anyone else drives the van, their details also need to be provided.

The kind of van you own

This includes the van’s registration number and details, age, value, number of seats, the van’s usual parked address, security features, and an estimate of your annual mileage.

Your current insurance documents

You can make sure you tailor your new quote to match the cover you have already and ensure cover is on the same basis.

To make your van insurance more affordable:

  • Use your no claims discount — if you have one with your current insurer, it can be transferred to your new van insurance provider.
  • Use our van insurance quote comparison engine to find a policy to suit you.
  • Add more security to your van.
  • Drive locally so your annual mileage is reduced.
  • Pay for the year in advance — this will save any instalment charges.
  • Insure only what you really need.
  • Increase your voluntary excess — this means the amount you pay at the point of claim will rise, but results in cheaper premiums.

In addition to cover for your van itself and protection for any accidents or injuries caused while using your van, you can also extend your van insurance policy to include many optional extras such as Legal Expenses, Breakdown cover and Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover.

You should also make sure your business is fully protected.  As part of Tradesman Saver’s standard tradesman policy, you’ll be covered for public liabilityproducts liabilitylegal expensesfinancial loss and accidental death cover, as standard.

Public liability insurance protects you from the cost of any injuries or property damage you cause to a third party. Accidents are common, and injuring a customer or member of the public can cripple your business. This means it’s crucial to get the cover you need.

Do I need van insurance?

Laws in the UK require all drivers to have at least third party insurance for the vehicle they drive. Even if you rarely use your van, you’ll still need insurance for it.

How much does van insurance cost?

The average price for van insurance in the UK varies depending upon where you live and your own personal circumstances.  The cost also depends on other factors like the amount of cover you need, the type of vehicle you drive, and your previous claims history.  Prices can vary from less than £300 per year right up to thousands of pounds.

I have a conviction. Can I get van insurance?

A criminal record could make getting van insurance more difficult, because drivers with convictions are seen as a higher claims risk. You should still be able to purchase a van insurance policy, but it might cost more.  At Van Saver, our insurers can cater for drivers with previous convictions.

Why is van insurance so expensive for young drivers?

Van insurance is more expensive for drivers under 25 because they are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident and make a claim.  We do have access to specialist markets for young drivers though so it is worth trying Van Saver to see how much money you could save.

Can I get van insurance with goods in transit?

Goods in transit insurance covers items that are stolen, lost or damaged, while being transported. This is usually included in a commercial or pickup van policy.  Alternatively, you can add cover for your tools and equipment to your Tradesman Saver policy.

Do I have to put a deposit down to get van insurance?

If you are paying monthly, then you will need to pay a deposit. Alternatively you can pay the premium in full.  You will see full details of the packages available by completing a quote.

Does My Van Insurance Come With Tool Cover?

Not all van insurance providers include tool insurance as standard, so you have to purchase this as an add-on or a separate policy. Luckily, you can add tool insurance to your Tradesman Saver insurance policy.

Does Van Insurance Cover Me If I Work As A Courier?

Yes. Simply select your trade during your quote to get a policy tailored to your profession.

If you work as a courier you also need public liability insurance. Further information on public liability insurance for couriers can be found on our couriers insurance page.
