For centuries, the shed has served as a refuge from the modern world. A place to tinker about, reflect with a cuppa, or something stronger. Most gardens have one for storage, but in recent years some people have taken sheds to the next level.
Since 2007, Shed of the Year has celebrated the extra effort shed owners have made to create an extension of the home. There are six categories in total and the most impressive builds are put to a public vote.
The Shed of the Year categories:
- Lockdown
- Pub/ Entertainment
- Nature’s Haven
- Cabin / Summerhouse
- Budget
- Unexpected / Unique
This year the finalists include, a gothic-inspired castle, an inventor’s workshop, and the world’s first shed to give free smallpox vaccinations.
There is also a pub built by father-and-son duo, James and Andrew Tittenson.

It may look humble, but here #DrEdwardJenner, the “father of #immunology” started the world’s first free vaccination clinic. Who knew! 🩺🛖🤩 #NHS
