New data reveals only 7% of construction workers are from the EU.
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that just 7% of workers in the UK construction industry is made up of EU workers, with 165,000 EU nationals in a 2.2 million strong construction work force – although London hosts nearly a third of those EU nationals, making up nearly third (28%) of the industry.
Figures also revealed that construction workers are getting older, with the amount of workers aged 45 or over with a leap of 13% from 1991 to 2011. The study comes as an argument against the notion that migrants had taken over the construction industry.
