Apprenticeship Wages Faces Doubt After Carillion Entered Liquidation

Apprentices are facing uncertainty over their wages after construction firm Carillion entered liquidation.

While their qualifications are still assured, weekly payment isn’t – “We aren’t 100 percent (on our wages), the whole money side is confusing. We know that they are talking about it, but we haven’t heard anything.” Said Liam Carroll, a carpenter apprentice.

Carillion was one of the biggest apprenticeship providers in Britain, receiving £6.5 million in a grant from the government just last year, the firm had many of their apprentices working on sites across the UK. However firms currently employing the apprentices are now lost for cash to keep the apprentices paid.

The Construction Industry Training Board has, according to the Education and Skills Funding Agency, become the alternative provider and representative for apprenticeships.

Although there has yet to be a concrete commitment on future wages, a spokesperson from the CITB has said pay will be secure “for now”. Any apprentices affected are advised to call 0344 994 4010.
