Tradesman Saver’s Tool Insurance

Our standard cover is:

  • Up to £10,000 tool cover per person
  • Includes cover for theft from unattended vehicles (higher excess may apply)
  • Covered on an All Risks basis anywhere in the UK

Tradesman Saver’s tool insurance begins from the moment you choose your cover to start from. Our policies are also in effect around the clock, and around the UK, offering you total protection if you can no longer use your equipment.

We cover van tool insurance in our policy, which also covers tools left in an unattended locked vehicle, although you will pay a slightly higher excess if they are stolen.

Tradesman tool insurance is one of our optional covers, but our complete automatic package also insures accidental death, paying out a lump sum in the event of a sudden, unexpected incident kills you or any of your staff.

In addition, our standard policy includes public liability insurance, which covers you against any claims made if your business activities injure a customer or member of the public, and products liability, protecting you if any injuries are caused by one of your products. In addition, you’re also covered for financial losses inflicted on a third party, and legal expenses of up to £250,000.

To provide your business with the most comprehensive protection against potentially disastrous circumstances, we offer personal accident insurance on top of our five-part automatic package. This provides coverage against major fractures, burns, the loss of limbs and senses, dislocation, and disability, as well as any hospital stays which last longer than 24 hours.

Depending on the severity of your situation, you could be entitled to receive a lump sum of up to £200,000. This, along with many other forms of cover, can be tailored to your needs as part of a wider public liability insurance policy.

Please note that tools insurance cover is an optional cover that you can add to your policy alongside your public liability.

What is equipment and tool insurance?

Tradesman Saver’s tools & equipment insurance cover offers financial protection against theft and damage, so if the worst should happen, you won’t find yourself out of pocket paying for replacements. We have varying levels of cover to accommodate big and small businesses, which means you can focus on keeping things running smoothly, while we take care of any bumps along the way.

It is important that you cover the full value of your tools or else you will be under-insured. Your business equipment cover needs to cover the full value of your tools in order to receive the full benefit of the policy.

Why do you need tool insurance cover?

When you’re running a business, the most important things you need to work are your tools. If any vital equipment is stolen, damaged or lost, you’ll be forced to replace them because you can’t risk being unable to complete a job on time, and to a high quality.

This could put a serious financial dent in your business, and stop you from doing your job until you can afford new tools. If your tools have been taken after your van has been broken in to, or even simply been damaged on the job, tool insurance cover can help you get back to work quicker than you could have ever expected.

Unlike public liability, tool insurance cover is not an automatic cover, it is an optional cover which can be added to your standard Tradesman Saver policy.

Tools Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get tool insurance without applying for any other cover?

Most insurers are unable to offer tool insurance on its own due to the high level of claims that arise from this type of cover. It is usually offered as an add-on to a comprehensive public liability insurance package such as the one offered by Tradesman Saver. If you’re looking to add tool insurance to your insurance policy documents, don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

Does Tradesman Saver’s tool insurance cover theft?

Yes, theft cover is provided anywhere in the UK but please note, there is often an increased excess if tools are stolen from a locked, unattended vehicle. Even if you have tool insurance cover, it’s extremely important that you remain vigilant, careful and protective of your tools.

Does Tradesman Saver’s tool insurance include overnight cover?

At Tradesman, we’re dedicated to protecting our customers and clients with the right insurance policies for them. As such, most of our tool cover policies include both overnight cover and transit cover, so if you do leave your tools in your van overnight, they’ll still be protected. However, it’s worth remembering that choosing to leave tools in an unlocked vehicle overnight, or without adequate protection, could sometimes be considered negligence and invalidate your policy.

If you’re not certain whether you’re taking enough steps to keep your tools safe, or you’re worried that your business premises don’t have the security it needs to protect your tools or equipment, get in touch today.

Is tool insurance covered in standard business insurance policies?

No, tool insurance is an add-on to most business insurance, home insurance and public liability insurance policies. It is important to ensure that you have the right level of cover for your tools and equipment. It’s extremely important that you read through your insurance policy documents carefully and ensure that you do have a tool insurance policy in-place if you require one.

Do I need tools in transit insurance?

No, you don’t. As an all-risks insurance policy, your tools in transit insurance covers the risks of theft, fire and accidental damage when your tools are in transit. It is important to note that if you store your tools or equipment in a van overnight, you’ll need to check with your insurer as there may be an additional charge for this type of cover.

What should I do if my tools are stolen?

If your tools are stolen, the first thing you should do is contact the police and report the theft. Once this is done, contact your insurer as soon as possible to inform them of the incident. Your insurer will then be able to assess the situation and provide guidance on how best to proceed with making a claim for your stolen tools.

How does tool insurance work?

Simply put, tool insurance, or business equipment insurance, protects your tools in the event that they are damaged, lost or stolen. This policy can cover a wide range of tools and equipment, including handheld tools, equipment in-situ or even tools in transit.

What does tool insurance cover?

Tool insurance covers a wide range of items, including hand tools, power tools, trade specific equipment, as well as portable computers and cell phones. Exact coverage varies between policies, but typically covers accidental damage or theft. Some policies may also provide coverage for losses due to natural disasters such as floods and fires.

Will my tools be covered on site?

Yes. Your tradesman tool insurance is an “all risks” policy, which means that your tools will be covered anywhere in the United Kingdom, no matter where they are located. This includes public and private sites, as well as transit between them.

Does tools insurance cover ordinary wear and tear?

Typically, tool insurance doesn’t protect against ordinary wear – these insurance policies are designed to protect the tools of your trade from being lost, stolen or damaged. However, make sure to check your policy wording carefully.

What kind of security do I need to worry about when it comes to covering my tools?

Before making a payment as a result of your claim, insurance companies will want to ask you some questions about the safety of your tools.

Some of these may include details such as vehicle alarm specifications if you leave your tools overnight in a van, or details about the construction of the building you were keeping your tools in. Keep in mind that, in some cases, insurance companies require you to keep your vehicle in a locked compound overnight if you intend to store your tools in it.

Our Tradesman Saver tools insurance provides cover for tools left in a locked, unattended vehicle but you will pay a slightly higher excess if they are stolen.

Does business premises insurance cover tools?

In most cases, business premises insurance can cover a percentage of the value of any tools which are stolen or damaged as a result of a break-in to your business premises. If you’re a self-employed tradesperson without business premises, it’s possible that your home insurance may also cover some of the cost.

However, if you want to completely cover the value of all the tools owned by yourself or your business, then a specific tools insurance policy is essential.

Does tools insurance cover plant equipment?

Typically, to protect plant equipment, it is essential to purchase a separate plant insurance policy. Plant equipment can be expensive and complex to repair, meaning that an individual tools insurance policy may not provide adequate protection.

It’s important to bear in mind the level of cover you need for your business when taking out a plant and machinery insurance policy as some policies may only cover a percentage of the value of your equipment, leaving you out of pocket in the event that your equipment is damaged or stolen.

What is not covered by tool insurance?

Insurance does not cover some events no matter how basic or comprehensive the policy you choose is. Some of these include any form of intentional damage or any damage that was caused by you or someone who works for you misusing the tool or equipment. You will also not get cover for any unlawful use of tools.

What is considered negligence when it comes to tool insurance?

When it comes to your tool’s insurance cover, negligence counts as any tools which aren’t being used correctly.

For example, any deliberate damage of a tool or equipment, not using safety precautions, leaving the tools in an unlocked vehicle or in an unsafe environment will all be considered negligence and will therefore invalidate your insurance cover. It is important to always take appropriate care when using any type of tools or machinery.
