Australia’s hottest plumber says she is often mistaken for a hairdresser.
Aimee Stanton, 24, is not your typical plumber and is regularly mistaken for a hairdresser. Having suffered from depression as a teen and being expelled from high school, Aimee enrolled in beauty school to be with friends, but found out this wasn’t making her any happier.
It was only after helping her dad with some laboring work that she figured out what she wanted to be doing with her life.
“When I started on the job, I was definitely getting weird looks. A lot of people aren’t used to seeing girls on the job, so they’re like ‘is she serious’? But I think it’s also been a blessing. You have to work hard to prove yourself and get your hands dirty.”
Aimee’s path into becoming a plumber wasn’t an easy one. During her first week, she fell through a roof and got a had a piece of metal stuck in her backside, even getting her bra stuck in a cable tray. Since then, Aimee has gone on to win the ‘Best Female Apprentice’ award and found fame starring in a reality television show.
Aimee now wants her journey to inspire other youths who have difficulty in finding a career path.
She said: “A lot of people assume women will be treated differently, but if show you can work hard, that’s not the case. I especially want more girls to get into this. But I want to help any struggling teenagers to explore other paths in life. If you really want something, you can achieve it. You just need a positive mindset. I want to show people you can turn any bad situation into a good one.”
We love to hear these kind of stories! What do you make of Aimee’s journey?
