What is Tradesman Insurance?

If you’re a tradesman, you know how important your safety is – not to mention your responsibility to members of the public. Tradesman insurance is one of the first things to look into when you decide to embrace a trade such as building, plumbing, or gardening.

Public liability insurance for tradesmen

Tradesmen have a number of unique risks to deal with on a daily basis, which is why getting public liability insurance is so essential. Because you work in other people’s homes, you need to get protection for any damage that you may cause to their property, or even to a member of the public or the customer themselves, while carrying out your job.

Public liability insurance is available for various types of unforeseen accidents, including damaging your client’s house or members of the public tripping over your tools. Keep in mind, however, that you’ll also need employer’s liability insurance to cover any accidents your employees may have at work.

Not all trades are covered in the same way by tradesman public liability insurance. The level of risk your business has when it comes to you or the members of the public has a high impact on the premium you have to pay for tradesman insurance.  The higher the risk of an accident occurring, the higher your premium.

How do you qualify for tradesman insurance?

To qualify as a tradesman, you need to be over the age of 18 and deemed as a professional in your specific field of work. As a rule of thumb, tradesman insurance is intended for people working from their own home, or on their clients’ property. This means that if you rent or own your own business premises, you may need to look into getting a business insurance package to properly protect your premises and all of your equipment.

Some of the trades that are usually covered by this kind of insurance include electricians, plumbers, builders, painters, roofers and many others. Each of these trades comes with a specific degree of risk, so the premium you’ll need to pay annually will vary accordingly.

Contract works insurance

Contract works insurance is available for tradesmen who need to be protected against insurable events that stop them from fulfilling a certain contract. For example, if a storm destroyed the extension you were working on as a builder, then you would be protected and your insurance would pay out to have the work repaired or re-done.

Optional covers for tradesman insurance

In addition to the aforementioned cover, tradesmen can also apply for optional packages including personal accident insurance, or even tools and equipment insurance. If you run your own business, becoming sick means that you are not able to earn any more, so you may need cover for that particular situation. The same goes for having your tools stolen from the site you’re working on, so it’s best to consider having those covered too.
