Public liability cover for safe installation

Tradesmen who install and remove safes should consider taking out public liability insurance cover. Securely installing a safe usually requires bolting it to the floor or wall of the room it’s installed in, in order to prevent thieves from stealing the entire safe. However, if done incorrectly or in the wrong spot, this can ruin the client’s property. The same goes for removing a safe—you will require specialist tools that can cause damage to a client or their property if they’re not used properly. For example, a customer could trip over any tools you may have lying around, or you could drop the safe and destroy your client’s flooring. In both situations, they would have grounds to make a claim against you or your business, which may leave you facing costly legal fees. However, taking out a safe installation policy which includes public liability cover as standard, you needn’t worry. Your insurer will cover the cost of all damages, allowing you to continue working and running your business as usual.

Typically, public liability cover is offered up to £5 million, which also applies to product liability cover. This protects both you and your business if a product you’ve supplied, installed, or sold causes personal or property damage.

What is safe installation insurance?

As crime rates increase, and burglars get smarter about the way they break into properties, simply hiding your valuables in a cupboard is no longer enough. Installing a safe is a much more secure way to protect these items, but the installation process is a little more complex than simply buying a safe and placing it in a room. You will need to ensure that it has been securely bolted to the floor or wall of your room to prevent burglars doing away with it or, in some cases, they can even be concealed in the wall. These placements all require careful consideration, as well as your professional expertise. However, this also means that you could risk damaging a client’s property, leaving you liable for any costs. Having the right insurance protects you from any claims made against you, ensuring your business’s finances aren’t affected.

Why do you need safe installation insurance?

A safe is typically built to be heavy-duty, offering protection against being tampered with or broken into. This makes them extremely heavy, and liable to cause damage if dropped or mishandled. If a safe was to accidentally fall and damage a client’s wall, floor, or personal belongings as a result of your negligence, you could be held liable. You will also need to be able to safely secure it to their property without your power tools causing any major damage as you bolt it to the wall or floor. Due to these risks, it’s vital to have the right insurance policy in place to financially protect you against any claims made against you or your business, ensuring you’re not left with debts you can’t afford to pay, no matter what happens.

Safe installation insurance: Frequently asked questions

How much is safe installation insurance?

There is no set price for safe installation insurance. The final cost will depend on the scale of the jobs you do, whether you hire any employees, and the additional cover you may require for your role.

Is safe installation insurance a legal requirement?

Not at all. If you’re working as a tradesman who installs and/or removes safes, you don’t need to hold insurance. But it is recommended in the event of any accidents, while some clients may even refuse to hire you if you don’t have any cover in place. As such, it’s good practice to have a valid policy. However, if you employ anyone, you will need to legally hold employer’s liability insurance.

What should I do if someone makes a claim against me?

If you find yourself facing a legal claim, you must keep a record of any correspondence as these can be used as evidence to help build your case. Get in touch with our team as soon as possible so we can let the insurer know, and begin to take the appropriate measures. It’s crucial that you share as much information with us as possible, and avoid leaving out any details, so we can offer as much support and advice as we can.
